When you go to flush your toilet, is the handle wiggly and loose? This could easily happen, especially if you’ve been using the toilet for years. Maybe the toilet doesn’t always flush right, or do you have to push on the handle several times to get it to actually flush the toilet?

Oftentimes, these problems can be fixed by simply replacing the handle, and it is not a very difficult thing to do.

If you look inside of the tank you can probably figure out how the handle works at a quick glance. The handle is usually attached by a lever and chain to the flapper, and when the handle is pushed down, you will see how it opens up and lets the water out. To replace the handle, you will need to loosen a nut that is on the inside of the tank, and then you need to disconnect the chain from the lever.

Depending on how your new handle compares to the old one, you might need to adjust the length of the chain to get the flapper to open properly. You will usually have several locations on the lever where the chain can attach, so you should be able to adjust it to fit just right.
